The association between worsening of synovitis and radiographic osteoarthritis progression is more pronounced in obese individuals: data from the osteoarthritis initiative

چکیده
Purpose: Synovial inflammation in the knee is associated with osteoarthritis (KOA) progression. Yet, relation of body mass index (BMI) to worsening synovitis and OA progression remains unknown. This study investigated association during a 2-year period radiographic KOA over 48 months 3 groups patients according their BMI. Methods: We analyzed 273 right knees from 243 participants Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). Subjects were randomly selected by matching for age, gender, race baseline Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L). Three 91 classified BMI analyzed: normal weight (BMI < 24.9 kg/m2, average 22.71 ± 1.69), overweight 25-29.9 27.37 ±- 1.40), obese ≥ 30 33.35 2.80). MRI Knee Score (MOAKS) was used semi-quantitative evaluation (0-3) effusion Hoffa-synovitis at 24 follow-up. defined as scale increase >=1 Results: In each group, mean age 61.3 years, 80 % women 97% Caucasian. Baseline KL follows: 44% grade 0, 32% 1, 17.6% 2 6.5% 3. Synovitis-effusion detected 53% (average score 0.60 ±0.62) 48% 0.56 0.65). Of interest, had higher than or patients. 83 group both follow up. At years follow-up, 37% experienced synovitis-effusion 0.93 0.83), 30% 0.77 0.75). Worsening not follow-up observed knees. Synovitis (83.1% vs 30.5% no progression, p<0.01). more pronounced group. 96.4% whereas 85.2% subjects 70.6% (p<0.05). Hoffa also (89% 33% , p<0.01), but this did vary Conclusions: months, nearly all subjects. Treatments reduce synovial effusions may slow non-obese

Soft drink intake and progression of radiographic knee osteoarthritis: data from the osteoarthritis initiative
OBJECTIVES We examine the prospective association of soft drink consumption with radiographic progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA). DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING This study used data from the osteoarthritis initiative (OAI). PARTICIPANTS In OAI, 2149 participants with radiographic knee OA and having dietary data at baseline were followed up to 12, 24, 36 and 48 months. MEA...
متن کاملThe relationship between clinical characteristics, radiographic osteoarthritis and 3D bone area: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
BACKGROUND Radiographic measures of osteoarthritis (OA) are based upon two dimensional projection images. Active appearance modelling (AAM) of knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables accurate, 3D quantification of joint structures in large cohorts. This cross-sectional study explored the relationship between clinical characteristics, radiographic measures of OA and 3D bone area (tAB). M...
متن کاملTibiofemoral subchondral surface ratio (SSR) is a predictor of osteoarthritis symptoms and radiographic progression: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI).
OBJECTIVE Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) is poorly correlated with radiographic severity, but subchondral bone measures may be useful for risk assessment as bone shape is grossly unaffected at early radiographic stages. We sought to determine whether compartment-specific size mismatch in the naturally asymmetric tibiofemoral joint, measured as tibiofemoral subchondral surface ratio (SSR):...
متن کاملMitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Haplogroups Influence the Progression of Knee Osteoarthritis. Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI)
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of the mtDNA haplogroups on knee osteoarthritis progression in Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) participants through longitudinal data from radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Four-year knee osteoarthritis progression was analyzed as increase in Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) grade, in addition to increase in OARSI atlas grade for joint spa...
متن کاملAverage symptom trajectories following incident radiographic knee osteoarthritis: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
INTRODUCTION Previous research has identified the existence of a prodromal phase of symptom worsening beginning on average 2-3 years prior to the first appearance of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA). The current study extends these observations to investigate the trajectory of self-reported pain, stiffness, function and other symptoms following the incidence of radiographic OA. METHODS D...
